The Wiener Library Pop-Up Exhibition

Michael Berkowitz will show and explain selected photographs and contemporary printed material that inform his current book, Jews and Photography in Britain. One of the featured objects is a 'kuker'--a fabulously durable photo viewer invented by Manchester's Salman Stemmer. Berkowitz learned that Stemmer was the inventor of the 'kuker' and other pioneering trends in photography from his interview in the Wiener Library's Refugee Voices collection. The exhibition also includes photos from the Weizmann family studios in Vienna, as recalled in the Refugee Voices testimony of Ernst Flesch. Publications edited by Stefan Lorant, and private and published photos of Helmut Gernsheim, and the work of photographers such as Gisele Freund, Gerti Deutsch, Erich Salomon, and Kurt Hutton will be displayed…
