Goethe-Institut London By Elisabeth Pyroth, Head of Information Services and Library Co-operation, Goethe-Institut London
As the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Goethe-Institut London promotes knowledge of the German language abroad and fosters international cultural co-operation. We convey a comprehensive picture of Germany by providing information on Germany's contemporary cultural, social and political life. Drawing on the rich variety of Germany's multifaceted liberal society and lively culture, we are able to use our professional skills to combine the experiences and ideas of our partners in Germany with those abroad in order to engage in dialogue rooted in partnership. In so doing, we act as service providers and partners for everyone who takes an active interest in Germany and German language and culture. What is more, we are independent and have no political affiliations. The Library of the Goethe-Institut mirrors this policy by being a resource centre as well as a forum for dialogue for those interested in modern Germany and for those teaching or studying German as a foreign language. Our interactive web projects promote discussion and enable us to engage way beyond London's borders. GRIB will provide a unique opportunity to promote our specialist collections of young contemporary literature, film and theatre, fine arts and photography as well as German language course material. For those who are looking for German resources within a collective pool, GRIB will create awareness of related collections in London and the UK, point out the specific topical strength of each of the individual organisations and libraries, and help direct the search to retrieve the exact information. By working together with partner organisations in GRIB, the Library of the Goethe-Institut has an opportunity to contribute its special resources through an optimised and comprehensive information portal. In so doing, it can better help researchers, as well as the British public, to access a rich variety of quality information.
